Local Events

  • Fridays after 5 - FREE concert with local artists and food trucks every Friday in the summertime!

  • Before moving to Johnson City, I had never been to a NASCAR race, but the Bristol Motor Speedway races are a lot of fun!

  • My family and I enjoy going to the weekly farmer's markets in the area. We can stock up on some of our favorite things and spend time together!

  • Meet the Mountains Festival! There are so many fun activities to try! It's a great way to see a variety of outdoor activities happening in our area.

  • My favorite local event is the Appalachian Fair. Great food and great concerts!

  • A great event for the family to walk through Founders Park and see what businesses have sponsored and decorated all of the Christmas trees each year. Special thing to do during the holidays.

  • We love Fridays after 5 concerts in Kings Commons where you can gather on a grassy bank with a really blended crowd of JC folks and enjoy different genres of live music together on warm weekend nights.

  • ETSU sports. Our kids love sports, and the games are affordable and accessible.

  • Christmas trees in Founders/King Commons. It's free and easy for kids of all ages! We love taking out-of-town family when visiting for Christmas!

Local Parks

  • King Commons - Beautiful panoramic view of Buffalo Mountain, with a big adventure playground for the kids. Bring a cardboard box to go turf sledding!

  • Willow Springs has the best views in Johnson City and walking trails, but my kids love the playground and the turtle pond.

  • Rotary Park has a splash pad which is a hit during those hot Summer afternoons! Good variety, whether hot or cold weather.

  • Founders Park - excellent walking path in downtown JC. It is a great place to do some light walking and take in some of the art there! Wednesday night FREE yoga! I love the sound of the creek rushing through its center and the train rolling through occasionally.

  • Winged Deer Park is my favorite park because it has disc golf, walking trails, mountain bike trails, playgrounds, softball fields, batting cages, and Boone Lake access for boat and kayak drop-ins. Warriors Path in Kingsport gets an honorable mention, too, because it offers all of the above, plus camping, pavilion rentals, and more boating options.

  • I can't pick one. Founders Park for a meal and a couple of laps to burn it off. Kings Commons Park to play and act like a kid. Willow Springs Park to have a picnic and let the kids play. Winged Deer Park is used to play disc golf or walk the wooded trails. Warriors Path (Kingsport) to kayak. Steel Creek Park (Bristol) is for disc golf or walking in the woods and lake.

  • Bays Mountain for the lakeside trail. Buffalo Mountain for a sunset view over Johnson City on Huckleberry Knob.

Family Fun

  • Quantum Leap Trampoline Park, Wallabies (Inflatable Slides & Obstacle Courses), Willow Springs Park

  • We enjoy stopping by the Johnson City Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings.

  • Our kids love the Backyard Dinosaur Park in Bluff City. It's a pay-by-donation park with great dinosaur models and hands-on activities.

  • Hands-On Discovery Center is a real dinosaur fossil site! The annual membership is very affordable. Our kids love the hands-on activities and the flower garden outside.

  • We enjoy fishing and throwing in our kayaks at the Wilbur Dam area.

  • Sycamore Shoals is just down the road in Elizabethton. We love the nature path and the satisfaction of skipping rocks and putting our toes in the water at the trail's end.

  • Johnson City Public Library. They do a wonderful job with events for the kids and are always ready to help find resources.

  • Hiking at Roan Mountain

  • Yee Haw — kids like the food and the outside setting with games.
